Career Choices
There are currently more then 400 Early Childhood Education positions across PEI within lisenced early childhood development centres, familiy resource centres and family support programs.
A certified early childhood educator could work within the PEI early childhood development sector with families, infants, toddlers, three or four year olds on either full or a part-time bases. Communities offer a variety of services to support to children and families through nursury programs, playtime programs, child care programs, kindergarten, and play school. Many centres are listed on our Child Care Choices Menu.
Scholarship Opportunity
The Early Childhood Development Association of PEI, in partnership with Holland College, is pleased to establish an entrance scholarship for an Island student who has been accepted into the Early Childhood Care and Education program at Holland College for the 2009-2010 academic year. A diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education can be obtained on PEI by attending the two year program offered at Holland College. Successful graduates interested in furthering their education can apply to University of Prince Edward Island to obtain their Bachelor of Child and Family Studies.

It is widely recognized that the training of Early Childhood Educators is one of the most significant indicators of the provision of quality child care. Learners in this program will not only have the opportunity to study the historical roots of child care and education and child growth and development, but will explore the connections between these factors. Learners will also develop an understanding of relationships and how play and the learning environment contribute significantly to a child's development. Through study and practical application, learners will experience the thrill of having the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children and their families.

UPEI Bachelor of Child and Family Studies
Open new doors with Child and Family Studies!
Do you have a diploma in early childhood care and education and a desire to continue your learning to better serve children, youth and families? Then the Bachelor of Child and Family Studies, an articulated program between Holland College and the University of Prince Edward Island is an option you will want to check out.
Graduates with an early childhood education diploma spend an additional 2 years completing upper level university courses at UPEI.
Full-time studies won’t work for you?! Don’t worry. The majority of the students in the program are part-time. They are taking 1-2 courses a semester while continuing to meet their work or family commitments..
Students in the Child and Family Studies program take courses in family resource management, family dynamics, life-span human development, professional practice with children, youth and families, child and family education, and parent-child interactions. Choose from electives in human sexuality, family policy, women’s experiences of aging, or housing. Courses from other disciplines are also required to prepare well-rounded family professionals. Many of the courses are offered in the late afternoon and evening to accommodate the flexible schedule needs of a part-time students who may be working in child care and early learning centres.
Upon completion of this program, students interested in further studies in education would be eligible to apply to any Bachelor of Education program. There’s enough flexibility in the elective courses for you to broaden your horizons with courses in history, languages, music, sciences , math or social sciences.

Early Childhood Education
The Early Childhood program is a 2 year competency-based diploma program. This program helps students gain the knowledge and skills required to work as an early childhood educator. Students will learn how to :
- Plan and implement educational activities which foster comprehensive child development
- Create a healthy and safe environment
- Respond to children’s needs at various levels
